Ozark Folk Art Exhibit
Just Doing My Work, an exhibit of paintings by folk artist Essie Ward, opens Monday, Jan. 27. Born in Searcy County, Ark., in 1902, Essie Ward was a self-taught artist whose oil paintings depicting scenes of traditional Ozark life became popular in the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1970, Ward was invited to participate in the Smithsonian's Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D. C. The Shiloh Museum collection includes 59 Essie Ward paintings, believed to be the largest and most complete collection of Ward's work, according to Carolyn Reno, museum collections manager. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 10, 2015.
