Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Pea Ridge students returned to school on Jan. 7 after Christmas holidays were extended from Jan. 2 because the roads were icy. Drivers were warned that it would still be dark outside when school started so they should watch closely for children.

Franklin Miller, a Pea Ridge farmer and seed plant owner, became the second candidate to announce his candidacy for the one opening on the Pea Ridge School Board. Tony Fletcher Jr. announced his candidacy two weeks previously.

The VIP's for the Pea Ridge Elementary school were Michael Leslie, Aaron Long, Chris Snow, Sonja Thomasson, Shawn Morrison, Ann Jones, Brett Paulsen, Brian Burkett, Traci Madewell, Dawnitta Long, Angela Paulsen, Kevin Thomasson, Terry Kitterman and Chad Cloer.

District honors were voted to four Pea Ridge football players for their play the previous season. They were Mike Gonce, Lelf Pistole, Chuck Hokeah and Jeff Patton.

John King was awarded Blackhawk player salute because he worked his way into the starting five and in the game against Farmington he had 15 points and made 12 rebounds. The Junior player salute was awarded to Jimmie Small who was said to be an outstanding player and team leader.

Twenty-two applications for police work in Pea Ridge were received and reviewed by the City Council. The City Council announced there was only one available position.

Dale Allison Beaman Jr. enlisted in the Air Force's Delayed Enlistment Program. Beaman graduated from Pea Ridge High School in 1980.

Unauthorized use of water from the town system moved the Garfield Town Council to vote to prepare an ordinance setting a $250 fine for anyone taking water from fire hydrants or any other unmetered use of the water.

The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Michael Burton, Pea Ridge boys basketball guard, crashed through a wire re-enforced glass window during a game. Burton was also the starting quarterback and on the baseball team. He received a severe laceration on his right tricep that required extensive surgery.

The Pea Ridge Fire Department had 24 volunteers, which was the maximum allowed, according to city ordinance.

Jamie Poindexter was saluted as the Blackhawk player this week. Coach Larry Walker, the girl's basketball coach, said Poindexter had been scoring consistently all year long.

The Logistics Loss Prevention and Global Supply department presented the Pea Ridge Elementary Library with a $760.91 grant. The money was raised through the Walmart Community Matching Grant program. Walmart matched the funds from the book fair.

The Blackhawk basketball team beat Eureka Springs 61-57 and Gravette 54-51. The notable Blackhawk player from the Gravette game was Bo Whitted who had 23 points and in the Eureka Springs game Adam Robbins had 17 points.
