Family activities slated at Hobbs State Park

Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area and the Friends of Hobbs plan to celebrate the life and extraordinary career of Aldo Leopold, and how he shaped conservation and the modern environmental movement with a day of fun-filled family activities on March 1. Leopold is the author of "Sand County Almanac." The book has had immense popular impact, and has been described as "a major influence on American attitudes toward our natural environment."

Activity Schedule:

Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area’s visitor center on U.S. Hwy. 12 just east of the Hwy. 12/War Eagle Road intersection.

FREE The public is cordially invited to partake in these activities, including sitting in on some or all of the readings of the of the “Sand County Almanac.”

• 9 a.m.-11 a.m. – Birds and Breakfast, Live Song Bird Research Demonstrations

Catch and Release with opportunities to touch a small bird

• 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Kid's activities

• 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Dutch oven demonstrations

• 10-11:45 a.m.: Readings of the Sand County Almanac by educators, environmentalists, land managers, and some of our well-known northwest Arkansas neighbors

• 12 p.m.: "Reading the Woods" – (short trail hike)

• 12 p.m.: Outdoor Journaling

• 1 p.m.: "Reading the Woods" – (short trail hike)

• 2 p.m.: Showing of "Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time, a documentary about the life and influences of the legendary conservationist.

The Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area's mission statement of providing both educational and recreational experiences while retaining a balance of harmony and stewardship with its abundant natural resources, has long echoed Leopold's conservational ethics. The documentary also illustrates how Leopold's vision of a community that cares about both people and land continues to inform and inspire people across the country and around the world.
