If you were not able to attend the book signing and Christmas Open House at the library on Tuesday, Dec. 9, you missed a fun time. But you can stop in today, Wednesday, Dec. 10, to enjoy hot cider and cookies. There will be more details on the book signing in next week's column.
The library will close for the Christmas holiday at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, and will reopen at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29. Experience has taught us that none of you want to spend Christmas Eve at the library. Our first Saturday to be open will be Jan. 3. We will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library will be open each Saturday through the end of March. Patron usage will be evaluated at that time to determine if those hours will continue to be offered.
If your civic club or organization has not signed up for display space at the library, please call us at 451-8442 or stop by and chat with us about it. This is a great way to showcase your group!
As I reflect back on this year in the library, I realize just how blessed the library is to have so much community support. The majority of our patrons follow the rules -- i.e. check-out library materials, return them on time in the same condition as they received them and let us know how we can better serve them. Unfortunately, our library, as with most others, has a few patrons who abuse their privileges by not returning library materials on time or worse not returning them at all. One individual asked me what I was so concerned about since we didn't have to buy the books. They thought all our books were donated by "the people who wrote them." If only! An average cost for a hardback fiction book by a popular author can be $25 - $30; the same title in large-print can be in excess of $35. Damaging or not returning library materials is unfair to everyone.
