Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Pea Ridge Mayor Jack Musteen read to the City Council correspondence concerning the amount of money the city would need to pay to have a special census. He asked for a motion to pay the $869, but Councilman Daryle Greene pointed out that the council has never voted to have a special census taken. Musteen said that this was not necessary, so the council voted to appropriate the money.

Ramona Roe, daughter of Superintendent and Mrs. Roy A. Roe, Pea Ridge, was awarded the scholarship key by Delta Theta Phi honorary law fraternity. The key signified excellence in scholastic achievement and was presented at the spring initiation and awards night.

Gov. Bill Clinton accepted an invitation to give the commencement address at Pea Ridge High School on May 18.

Pea Ridge High School and Elementary School received an "A" rating, highest given, as a result of an evaluation by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Twelve Corners Baptist Church decided to commemorate its roots by celebrating Easter at Elkhorn Tavern on Pea Ridge National Military Park. The church was established there in 1842, but was driven out 20 years later during the Civil War.

Northeast Benton County Fire Department Board of Directors members were Dan Griffee, Sandy Bugner, Sandy Hennegan, Ralston Taylor, Bud Cox, Karen Peterson and Dave Broadbooks.

Rehiring of all the certified teachers was approved by the Pea Ridge School Board. Brad Niedecker, high school math teacher, told the board he planned to go to Chile with his wife and teach there.

Blackhawk baseball statistics showed them at 14-4 with Wes Mabry carrying a .462 batting average and a 5-0 pitching record.

Navy Airman Jimmy D. Mills of Pea Ridge, son of Jerry D. Mills of Pea Ridge, recently departed for a six-month Western Pacific and Indian Ocean deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, home-ported in Alameda, Calif.

More than 500 stuffed animals were contributed in Sydney Ilene Scott's memory with 165 given to the Arkansas Children's Hospital and the rest given to the Children's Advocacy Center of Benton County and the Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter.

County Road Department officials announced plans to straighten, widen and resurface It'll Do Road. Fred McKinney donated the red dirt that would be used for building up the road and Bill Gerry traded part of his property, so the road could go straight, for the old part of the road that wouldn't be needed anymore.

Two candidates were set to run for county judge -- County Judge Gary D. Black and Leo Lynch. Black was seeking his third two-year term as judge. Lynch announced his intention to run. Both men spoke at the regular meeting of the Republican Men of Benton County.

Katelyn McCoy earned the Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn and the second highest overall. She received the award for her Easter basket project. The Easter baskets for the Children's Ward at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers.
