40 Years Ago Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Two Pea Ridge fourth graders, Kimberley Knox and Bruce Schooley, collected $56 for muscular dystrophy on behalf of the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

The Blackhawk football team announced the captains of the 1973 football team included Gary Brown, Randy Easterling and Darrell David. The Blackhawks lost this week in a game at Altus, 0-6.

The historic Pea Ridge United Methodist Church was torn down to make way for a new sanctuary.

Worship services were held in the educational annex building. Wayne Ellington was chairman of the building committee and Billy Hall was the contractor. Haryle Greene prepared the plans.

Pea Ridge Fire Chief Harold Hurd announced that country music performer Earnest Tubb would perform in Pea Ridge on Oct. 1 as a fundraiser for the Fire Department.

30 Years Ago Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1983 Pea Ridge Country Times

The Pea Ridge Public School’s VIP students of the week included Josh Lakin, Sara Strachener, Rachel Henson, Tony Costales, Janetta Weston, Tanya Baker, Cara Grindle, Angie Frazier, Lucy Johnson, Timmy Pearson, Eck Ross, Dustin McClelland, Mike Davis and Lynn Lovstad.

Bart Paukune, Pea Ridge, placed second in his age division of the Race of Rogers, which was a running race he entered after having open heart surgery two years prior.

Pastor Lee Keith led his congregation in prayer as Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church observed its 150th anniversary.

LaVern Sexton was hired, on a motion by Lyle Tatman, to replace Cathy Skelton, who resigned as Seligman, Mo., city treasurer.

Thursday, Sept. 16, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Don Henson, of Pea Ridge, collected 356 baseball caps. He said when he started that the hats cost about $5 but when the article ran it cost him almost $12 per hat. He had 12 to 14 different Walmart hats along with one from every state he’s visited. Many people also brought him hats as gifts for his collection.

The Pea Ridge United Fund raised $3,000 at the fall kickoff softball tournament. Twelve co-ed adult softball teams competed for trophies. The team technicians from Courtney Electronics in Garfi eld won fi rst place.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks won their fi rst home game which was against Farmington, 11-0. The Blackhawk player of the week was Erik Nobles who had the highest statistics on defense in the game against Farmington. The points came from a field goal, a safety and a touchdown.

The majority of students entering kindergarten in Pea Ridge Elementary School were less preparedto learn than students at the national average, according to Mike Mason, principal of Pea Ridge Elementary. Screening tests, administered for the fi rst this year, disclosed that 61 percent of the school’s 73 kindergarten students scored below the 40 percentile mark on the exam.

The Pea Ridge Hoopsters, a competitive basketball team which was made up of players enrolled in the seventh grade, fi nished their season with 10 wins and 13 losses. The team hoped to win the 2009 high school girls basketball state championship. The teamincluded Lindsey Falkenstein, Amy Simpson, Kathryn Ward, Morgan Marble, Jennifer Baker, Jessica Hall Brittany Franken, Ariel Billington and Madison Boller Coaches were Kevin Hall and Mike Billington.

The First United Methodist Church in Pea Ridge dedicated its new stained glass windows during the regular Sunday worship services on Sept. 14. The windows were created by Garfield stained glass artist Richard Isaacs. A potluck dinner followed the services.

Lonnie Barnett and Di-Anna Wallace were the Pea Ridge School Board candidates. Lonnie Barnett was running for re-election for his position.
