40 Years Ago Wednesday, Oct. 31, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Miss Phyllis Evans was crowned as Pea Ridge Homecoming queen. The attendants - Lori Cheek, Joshua Ramsey and Kelly Evans - were escorted by the tri-captain, Randy Easterling.

Garfield Mayor Coen Ross returned home from Rogers Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for a week.

The newspaper yearly subscription rate for 1973 was $3 for locals and $5 for everyone else.

The ’Hawks lost by 1 point to West Fork. It was pouring down rain which didn’t help the Blackhawks at all the second half.

Landowners along Patterson Road initiated action aimed to have the road blacktopped by the county.

To initiate the action, Owen Wood, a Patterson Road resident, met with County Judge Al Norwood.

There was no haunted house in Seligman, Mo., on Halloween, because the old vacant house, across the railroad tracks in town that was used as the haunted house the year before, burned down. Seligman volunteer fi refi ghters responded to the fi re.

Wright’s Auto Parts opened for business on Arkansas Highway 94. It was a◊liated with Green Light.

The Blackhawk salute of the week went to the Blackhawk Boosters, whose members honored included Bill Clark, president; Jerry Burton,vice president; Sharon Webb, secretary; Joyce Bone, treasurer; Burton Clark, Bill Bollinger, James Mayfield, for running the chains on the sidelines;

Curtis Paulsen, for keeping the statistics; Jim Cheek for announcing the game;

and Joe Cramer and Randy Easterling, for handling the scoreboard and clock.

The Red Ribbon poster winners were Magen Poolaw, Aaron Wade, Emery Phillips, Mike Rice, Chris Robinson, Christina Speakman, Savannah Schwitters, Jacob Wagner,Kilton Hurley, Bradley Morgan, Cody Woodard, Megan Blevins, Scottie Lyons, Kasey Tyra, Jennifer Tillman, Shannon Roberts, B.J. Fletcher, Manuel Olguin, Courtney Nelson and Laurie Fowler.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Taylor of Garfi eld celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary at the Garfi eld Baptist Church.

A $1 million lake house on Beaver lake burned down on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1993. Sixty fi remen from seven fire departments battled the fire. The seven departments responding were NEBCO, Pea Ridge, Little Flock, Rogers, Beaver Lake, Lowell and the Volunteer Ambulance Service.

The Pea Ridge footballteam lost to Elkins 24-12.

The Elks had 238 total yards, while the ’Hawks had only 122.

At 3:54 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, the temperature sign in Pea Ridge read 89 degrees. By Saturday, temperatures had dropped 30 degrees.

The Pea Ridge football team gathered a win and also 446 yards of o◊ense against Cedarville. The Blackhawks scored all 43 of their points in the fi rst half of the game.

Shawna Crone won fi rst place overall for her drugfree poster during Red Ribbon Week at Pea RidgeElementary School. Shawna won a T-shirt. All the posters were on display at Arvest Bank in Pea Ridge.

The newly-formed Ridge Rockers Square Dance Club of Pea Ridge attended the Odds ’n Evens Halloween Square Dance in Rogers. The club was started in September by Square Dance Caller Jerry Hay and his wife, Sharon, and members Diana Smith and Denny Exceen.

Barbara Davis was named Pea Ridge High School Agriculture student of the month. She is the daughter of Mrs. Tonya Kitterman and Mr. Wesley Beights. This was her fi rst year in agriculture and she earned the fourth highest in meat sales.
