40 Years Ago Wednesday, Nov. 14, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Mike Marlow, a Pea Ridge freshman, shot his first deer on his fi rst hunting trip ever. He harvested an eight-point buck at 8 a.m. on opening day of deer season.

Billy Barnes, of Pea Ridge, was honored to be the rodeo clown at the first Benton County I.R.A Championship Rodeo. He not only helped ensure the safety of the cowboys but also provided entertainment to the crowd with his stunts, including a camera act and an exploding toilet.

Dave Thomas, from Pea Ridge High School, placed second in the state crosscountry meet with a time of 13 minutes and 50 seconds.

The course was two and a half miles long. Jordan Miser placed 19th and Leslie Aaron placed 20th.

Net proceeds from the Pea Ridge Fall Festival amounted to $1,664.72.

Gathering for a meeting of the United Methodist Women of Pea Ridge were Nettie Ricketts, Artie Hickman, Ethel Whitchurch, Alma Crabtree, Mary JaneJarecki, Vivian Dempsey, Lena Evans, Eva Simpson and Faye Price.

The Pea Ridge Powder Pu◊football game was won by the juniors, who beat the seniors 26-0. The boys had a chance to be the cheerleaders for this event. The cheerleaders were Mike Meyers, John Montgomery, Je◊Patton, John King, Paul Mariano and Mike Gonce.

Pea Ridge High School students Chris Merritt, Dani Dryden, Deena Jump and Sandy Escue attended a Scott Hi-Q student practice session at the University of Arkansas.

Deena Jump and Danny Prophet, Pea Ridge, werenamed Benton County students of the month by the Elks Club. Miss Jump had a 3.97 grade point average and Mr. Prophet had a 3.96 GPA.

Betty and Paul Fields of Bentonville opened PJ’s Cafe in what was formerly Eiko’s Oriental Restaurant on East Pickens Street.

Beta Alpha Sorority inducted three new members, Louis Smith, Ginny Kraus and Elizabeth Baker.

Wes Mabry was the Blackhawk basketball player of the week for scoring 21 points against Gentry.

The sixth grade Pea Ridge students who had perfect attendance the fi rst nine weeks were Shelby Buttry, Ariel Hall, Derek Hamilton, Tori Law, Elizabeth Learn, Annice Olejniczak, Ashley Peters, Cody Sanders, Caitlen Stelipfl ug and Brittany Swigart.

Ashley and Amanda Weitzel, twins from Pea Ridge, were diagnosed with tubular interstitial nephritis uveitis syndrome, which causes kidney disorders and chronic infl ammation in the eyes. The Lions Club donated a trip to California to see a specialist, which they hoped would give the family solutions.
