Memories recalled

Alva Johnson remembers the house on Arkansas Highway 127 as his Uncle Emory Bailey’s house.

“Everybody knew them.

They used to sit on the front porch and wave to everybody,” Johnson said Tuesday. “We had a lot of good memories there.”

“They had a couple of old basket weave rocking chairs on the front porch,” Johnson said.

He said the house was built about 1900 and bought by his uncle, his mother’s brother, in the 1960s. There, his aunt and uncle raised cattle.

The highway in front of the house was a dirt road for a long time. “I don’t remember when they blacktopped it,” Johnson said, adding that his father helped work on that road with the WPA (Works Projects Administration).”

The house was listed on the county tax records as belonging to Richard Garner, Garfield.
