’Til Next Time: Tired of same news on TV

Three things that I’m tired of: How soon can I take my gun to church; blackout at football game; and will Hillary run for president?

When fire trucks came down Sugar Creek Road, we knew that one of our neighbors had a problem.

We remember so well, about a few years ago, how comforting it was to have neighbors show up for friendship and comfort. So, we started out to be good neighbors. We started at Eileen Weimer’s house. I didn’t know that she was already in the hospital. (She died the next day.)

We drove on past Berle and Dora Wilson’s old house, looked over Tom and Diana O’Brien’s and it seemed quiet. We passed Stettmyer’s Corner; seemedto be a lot of activity there.

So far, so good.

On up the hill we met Viola Hazelwood doing the same thing we were. She told us she had checked on her sister, Verna’s family, and she was going to check on her daddy, John Miser. I looked over at C.W. Wilkerson’s and all was quiet, so we drove back down into Sugar Creek Valley and checked on the Greens on Rainbow Ranch. We had a nice car ride and visit.

Did your mother ever tell you to not cut towards yourself? I was peeling a turnip and didn’t evenknow that my finger was in the same room until the knife slipped. Then there is the unhandy business of washing up and soaking blood out of dish towels and the turnip still had to be peeled. It was delicious boiled with butter and salt on it.

It’s my time for dumb stunts. Sunday I had to leave church early because I had taken my pills on an empty stomach and they came back on me. The Sunday before that I got hung up in a barbed wire fence by the hood on my coat while on my knees straddling a barbed wire.

My main concern was that no one was watching. The week before I had walked into a cupboard door. I turned 80 years old last month and am still waitingfor the wisdom of old age to kick in.

I’m looking forward to the NEBCO Chili Cook-off from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. Then, that evening a soup supper from 5-7 p.m. at the School Heritage Building. Then, a chili supper from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the school cafeteria. I will be fed that weekend. Good-bye diet!

Those and all the other goings on is what keeps Pea Ridge lively and I haven’t even been to the library yet this year. See you there!

Remember your Valentine!
