40 Years Ago Wednesday, Dec. 5, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Weston Street Full Gospel Church opened its doors for its first service Thursday night, Nov. 29.

There wasn’t anyone to run the concession stand at the Pea Ridge basketball games. John Brown, Randy Easterling and Dennis Bray asked to run the concession stand and have the proceeds go to the Jimmy Byer Memorial Fund. At the fi rst home game, the boys raised $61 for the fund.

A Simmental heifer sold by two Pea Ridge cattlemen, Keith Escue and Kent Anderson, at the Arkansas Simmental sale in Little Rock, topped the sale in her class, and brought her owners $6,100. A second heifer sold by the two went for $4,900.

Garfield Mayor Coen Ross, who had been mayor since 1960, announced that he would not seek reelection.

The senior boys basketball team lost to West Fork, 55-37. The girls basketball team defeated West Fork 48-37.

The junior high boys basketball team included Mark Shepard, Grant Hardin, Jimmy Small, Wesley Wilkerson, Sonny Sutherland, Guary Morgan, Ricky Gounce, Randall Bray, Bobby Phillips and Kevin Sorrell.

Bobby Stewart and Richard McGowan, members of the Pea Ridge Boxing Club, won silver gloves in thestate tournament in Little Rock. The two were scheduled to go to the silver gloves champions regional meet which included Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma.

First Responder graduates included Janet Pope, Jean Ruskau◊, Ed Sidwell, Janett Bell, Elmer Van-Doren, Jack Clark, Robert White, Wanda Youngblood, Katie White, Mike Mencl and Audrey Crawford.

The Rev. Marty Cash, pastor of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, was one of four church people representing Arkansas at the South Central Leadership Seminar held at the United Nations in New York City.

A giant Christmas card was made for U.S. Marinesin Lebanon by the Garfi eld Girl Scout troop.

Thursday, Dec. 9, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

More than $1.5 million worth of new homes were constructed in Pea Ridge.

The total construction value was $3.2 million. There were 30 new homes built.

Wes Mabry was the Blackhawk player of the week because he scored 47 points against Bentonville in the Benton County Tournament.

Fire destroyed the rural home of the Dewey Easum family. The house was located at Johnnie Bone Road and White Oak Ridge Road. Easum, his wife and child fled the home and were nothurt.

Shane Wagner, from Pea Ridge, was selected as a soloist for the Festival of Christmas program at Ouachita Baptist University. Mollie Ragland, of Pea Ridge, also performed with the OBU Wind Ensemble.

The Blackhawk boys basketball team looked impressive in their 70-29 victory over Shiloh Christian.

Dr. Jesse M. Coker held a signing of his book “My Unforgettable Memories of World War II.” He donated $10 of each book sold to the PTO’s mini-gym project.

Arvest matched his total donation.
