Remembering Christmastime in 1946

posted: 12/25/2013 5 a.m.

I ve always enjoyed Christmastime, possibly because the early Christmases in my life were happy times, and I still remember. At Christmas time 1946, I was 6 years old, going on 7, and was in the middle of my first year of school at Pea Ridge School. World War II was over, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had passed away, and our new president of the United States was Harry S. Trumann. The school population at Pea Ridge had the building bursting at the seams and in need of expansion, but Pea Ridge was still a small village of fewer than 200 people. Many more people lived on small farms in those days, including ourselves.

Sing together: Christ is born!

posted: 12/25/2013 5 a.m.

Humans have always been singing. We have sung since the beginning. No one knows when exactly we started singing, but we know that the earliest collections of songs we have are religious in nature, among them the Psalms and the other songs of the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Hebrew Scriptures, as in our lives, the people sing when they are happy, when they are sad, when they are perplexed, or angry, or frightened, or defiant and when they are scared.

We might call this the anatomy of an ambulance run or the continuing analysis of an ordinance. I m not sure which. Either way, or anyway you want to refer to it, this is a continuation of the question of how do we pay for rural ambulance service?

I have never been a person to require a lot of entertaining, and I usually have plenty of things to do, inside or out, so I don t mind the confining weather all that much. But, that said, I still have tinges of cabin fever.
