40 Years Ago Wednesday, Aug. 29, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Keith Escue, Richard Beaver and Jewel Pendergaft were honored by the Pea Ridge School Board for their dedicated service as members of the Board of Education for the Pea Ridge School District.

A Pea Ridge woman was injured when she swerved to avoid a Hudson’s Farm truck and hit a concrete culvert. The woman was still hospitalized a week later.

The Pea Ridge football team roster was announced. Players included Darrell David, Gary Brown, Randy Easterling, Doyle Sutherland, Curtis Snow, Jordan Miser, Jim Phillips, Dewey Whisenhunt, James Grotts, Jackie Ford, Ricky Dye, Danny Hickman, David Scism, Kenneth Laramore, Rober Goines and Alan Ash.

A 31-inch squash was grown by Lillie Allen Ackley and Lester Howell, of Pea Ridge, with the help of Jerry and Gary Morgan.

The squash weighed 31 pounds.

Donkey ball was played Aug. 24 at the Little League Field with the Pea Ridge school faculty facing the Pea Ridge volunteer fi remen. The game was played like softball but the players rode on donkeys instead of running. It was decided after the game that the donkeys really won; the faculty managed to get fi ve runs and the firemen got four.

The Volunteer Ambulance Service blitz event produced 37 new volunteers and $4,000 in donations.

Bob Urbanek, of Twelve Corners, showed o◊his “Big Girl” tomatoes. The smallest tomato weighed one and a quarter pounds and the largest one weighed two and a half pounds.

The seniors for the 1993 Blackhawk football team included Jeremy McIntyre, Barry London, Michael David, Wes Mabry, Erik Nobles, Joe Peck, Eric Crabtree, Dan Hinskey, James Scott and Robert Busby.

Cleva Douglas, of Gateway, grew a cantaloupe whick weighed more than 15 pounds and was the largest on the vine.

20 Years Ago Thursday, Sept. 2, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Wayne Weatherford, of Pea Ridge, won not only first place in his division at the Johnson County Texas Writers Conference, but also won first place in the overall winner’s division.

Nancy and Jim Hollenbeck, owners of Pool Sanitation of Avoca, bought the Avoca Feed Store from a Pea Ridge couple, Loyd and Evetta Pifer.

Hollenbeck of Avoca, completed recruit training and was promoted to his rankstated above.

The 25-year reunion of the 1968 graduating class of Pea Ridge planned to host a reunion on Oct. 9. The festivities were said to include an all-day family picnic and an evening meal.

10 Years Ago Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Odds ’N Evens Square Dance Club gave a free show in the Arvest parking lot to promote their square dance lessons for the community of Pea Ridge.

Mike Harrod, Pea Ridge football coach, announced he was a member of a band called the Old Dime Box.

Harrod played guitar and sang with the band.

The 2003 Pea RidgeBlackhawks football team had 17 starters returning, with senior tight end Shawn Woods the leader.

Woods earned all-conference honors in 2002. He had five catches for 104 yards and one touchdown, and on defense had four interceptions.

Jennifer Hohn, 2003 Blackhawk Marching Band drum major, attended the George N. Park Drum Major Academy at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Nathan Brown, Pea Ridge graduate, and Shane Wagner, of Pea Ridge, were selected new student leaders at Ouachita Baptist University for the fall semester of 2003. These students helped the new students to smoothly adjust to college.
