Council conducts business

Checking every avenue to save money, Pea Ridge City Council members looked at several bids for property insurance at their regular meeting Tuesday, Aug.

  1. Two bids were received from Sims and Renner Insurance each with di◊erent deductibles and one from the Arkansas Municipal League.

After evaluating the bids and comparing costs, council members elected to select the bid from Sims and Renner with$1,000 deductible.

“I’d like to stick with the one we’ve been going with,” Ray Easley said.

Sandy Button, city clerk, said the city has used that company for well over 10 years. “They’re so good to come up here and talk to us when we need them.”

Several years ago, the city changed to the vehicle insurance provided by the Arkansas Municipal League.

“We had looked at the property insurance provided by the Arkansas Municipal League last year,” Mayor Jackie Crabtree said, explaining that’s why Sims and Renner provided two bids with di◊erent deductibles so council members could compare similar policies.

Streets will be “overlayed” this fall, according to Nathan See, street superintendent. See told council members the plan for this year includes South Davis, Tinnin, Smith and East Harris streets. “We’ve widened Smith Street two feet either way for the use of bank, grocery store … we put a big concrete culvert under there. We’ve already done all the drainage.”

“On Tinnin, we’re going to put curb and gutter onthe north side to keep the water from going onto that property and prevent deterioration of the asphalt,” See told council members.

Council members approved advertising for bids for the work which See anticipates taking about two days. He said there is a little over two and a half miles of street being overlayed.

See praised M.J. Hensley, a retired engineer, who has donated his time to the city and supervised many drainage and street projects. “He’s been very kind with his time. He’s taught me a lot.”

See said the sidewalk project was slowed down by rain, but is back on track and should be completed by Oct. 14.
