40 Years Ago Wednesday, Aug. 22, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

The Pea Ridge Military Park celebrated its 1,000,000 visitor. The visitor was one member of a family of three visiting from Tulsa.

The Future Homemakers of America met at Pea Ridge High School. They discussed projects, activities and events for the 1973-1974 school year.

Pea Ridge High School students were welcomed back to school by fi nished and unfi nished improvements to their school. The new gym was still under construction as well as were eight new classrooms. The fi nished projects included a new roof and many new o◊ces.

First Baptist Church of Garfield held a picnic at the Ventris Recreation Area on Beaver Lake. Sixty people attended and nine were baptized during the worship service.

The J.C. Beaver family, Pea Ridge, was named the Benton County Farm Family of the Year.

The annual Blackhawk Black-White football game was set to be held Aug. 25.

The admission that year was a bar of soap or towel per family.

O◊cials of the Pea Ridge School District announced they would only have school to 1 p.m. until the heat cools down. This was a safety measure to ensure that students didn’t overheat inside the school.

O◊cials at the Pea Ridge National Military Park announced they would go forward with the development plan proposed to commemorate the 121st anniversary of the Battle of Pea Ridge. The plan was said to not a◊ect the park during construction but would help it after the project was completed.

The 1933 graduates of Seligman, Mo., High School attended a reunion. Six graduates, Bernice Still Beecroft, Lionel Jung, Edna Edwards Tatman, Gerald Osborne, June Harrold Mooney and Lyle Tatman, attended along with the superintendent at the time, James R. Craig.

Charles Cole, of Garfi eld, was in satisfactory condition at Springdale Memorial Hospital after being burned in an electrical fl ash fire while working at Beaver Water District water treatment plant.

20 Years Ago Thursday, Aug. 26, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Pea Ridge School District announced that 850 students enrolled in the district. The superintendent stated that roughly 420 students were enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade and roughly 420 students were in sixth grade through high school.

Two members of the Battlefield 4-H Club attended the State 4-H O-Rama. ClayWagner got first place in reporting while, Ashley McCool received fi rst place honors in the home furnishing contest.

Jim Whisenhunt and his daughter, Tanna Whisenhunt, both of Pea Ridge, opened Whisco Sheet Metal, which specializes in heating and air conditioning sales and service. Jim was said to be in charge of the manual labor while Tanna was in charge of the business aspect of the company. The business was focused on helping the Pea Ridge area.

GTE installed a new digital switch to serve its 656 prefix customers in Gateway.

10 Years Ago Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Mike Harrod, Pea Ridge Blackhawk football coach, said that he had three potential starting quarterbacks. The three were Landon McGarrah, sophomore; Steven Woods, sophomore; and Cody Woodward, senior.

Crystal Tharp, sophomore at Pea Ridge High School, won a dirt bike race in Celeste, Texas, against women. She then competed in a race in Stillwater, Okla., where she placed third against all males.

The Pea Ridge graduating class of 2003 purchased planters for the school district; the planters were placed at the entrances of all the schools.
