40 Years Ago Thursday, April 11, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Harold D. Hurd, a resident of Gateway and owner of a cabinet shop in Pea Ridge, was serving as fire chief of the Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and the Seligman Area Rural Fire Department at the same time.

Tulips in the snow at daylight refused to open to the snow blowing across Pea Ridge country from the north. Peach trees had already bloomed and apple trees were in mid-bloom.

Little snow accumulated.

The Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene was closed while moving to its new quarters in the remodeled barn back of the Jines home at 804 N.

Steven Sheppard of Pea Ridge was promoted to Lance Corporal in the U.S.

Marines.

Some Missouri property owners adjacent to Gateway have requested that the Gateway Rural Water Association serve their area with water when the service begins.

New Seligman, Mo., Mayor Leonard Juel conducted Seligman’s council meeting, after his swearing-in by City Clerk Zelda Relethford. Also sworn in were new councilmen James Appleton, east ward, and Earl Bolton, west ward, who was re-elected.

Eddie Daniel’s ecology class at Pea Ridge High School built a planter garden in front of the library and English classrooms on campus as their contribution to spring fix-up, cleanup efforts.

Pea Ridge High School and Pea Ridge Elementary School were fully accredited by the North-Central Association of Colleges and Schools for the first time.

Site preparation was under way for the construction of a new $500,000 water tower for the city of PeaRidge. The tower, which was to be enclosed from the base, was expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Pea Ridge High School senior high track team placed second over-all at the Eureka Springs Class A Invitational Track Meet.

Lucas Fraley was the highpoint individual in the tournament.

10 Years Ago Wednesday, April 9, 2003 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Members of Cherie Fisher’s high school ecology and other science classes helped plant signature Foster holly trees along North Curtis Avenue.

Chuck Simmons and Scott Metz held a grandopening at their new business, A New Season, on West Pickens Road in the old Everdale Gardens location.

A tribute to Billie Jines was published in this edition of the paper. She died April 6, 2003, at her home.

Two horseback-riding clubs worked together to make the horse-riding trail at the Pea Ridge National Military Park safer and cleaner. Eleven members of the Cowgirl Up, a ladies trail-riding group, and the Gaited Horse Club of Northwest Arkansas worked with park personnel for six hours cleaning up trash and clearing brush and branches from the lower half of the park’s horse trail.
