Library Notes: It’s been a roller coaster ride

— This past week has certainly been an emotional roller coaster! Worry over family and friends in the path of Hurricane Isaac - everyone came through fine with little damage. Much happiness over the work done in the new library building by Gary Brown and two of his employees - at no charge - with assistance from city building inspector Tony Townsend, city maintenance employee Corey Flowers and a community service worker. Thank you so much, Gary - the Library Board and I appreciate it so very much.

A lot of framework was completed and insulation added on some of the walls.

The building is really beginning to take shape. Disappointment when we learned some funding we had thought would be forthcoming would not be. So, we just buckle down and work harder and hope for better days ahead.

To help raise some much needed money for the library building fund, we will be holding a book sale this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 - 8,at Camp’s Auction Barn. The Camp’s are having a Swap Meet on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 - 8, in conjunction with the city-wide garage sale. Mark your calendars and get out and get some good bargains.

Library Board members and volunteers will also be selling books at the Mule Jump on Saturday, Oct. 13.

We hope to have a Bake Sale in November shortly before Thanksgiving. Anyone who wants to work at any of these events or donate to them, give me a call at the library at 451-8442. It is going to take a lot help from all the community to get our building completed and get us moved in.

I cannot tell you how much we appreciate the donations of money, books and time from all of you. We appreciate all the community support!

I love my job for so manyreasons and not the least of which is the fact that I meet so many nice people and have such interesting experiences. Last week I met a lady going into Webb’s as I was on my way back to the library from City Hall. We said hello and started talking about the weather. She asked if I was the librarian and when I shook her hand and replied that I was, she told me that she really enjoyed reading my column. She ended up going to the library with me and getting a library card. Needless to say she made my day.

The week before a gentleman came in right after I opened for the day carrying a glass jar with what appeared to be a VERY large fuzzy red ant. After doing some research, we learned it was a female wingless wasp that has a nasty sting!

We proctor on-line college exams, get lots of hugs from the little children before and after Story Hour, help patrons find some good reading material and offer computer assistance. With the help of the volunteers we check books inand out, shelve the returned books, issue new library cards, answer the phone and wade through catalogs to find books that appeal to a wide range of reading tastes. Thank Heaven my job is not boring!

Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. is the start of our fall/winter Story Hour. Ms.

Peggy Lowden will be back to read and do craft projects with the children. Bring your children and grandchildren and come a little early to fill out a short form.

Hope your Labor Day weekend was fun and that you are as thankful for the rain as I - even though our mower is in the shop and the grass is really growing!

See you at the library!
