Golf Classic set

Field is limited to first 80 players

— The 19th Annual Pea Ridge Golf Classic Four-Person Scramble is set for Saturday, Oct. 20, at Big Sugar Golf Club.

Jerry Wilkerson, co-manager of the course with Jim Roe, said the scramble is the same golf tournament begun 19 years ago by John Brown, Jim Cheek, Lee Hall, Jerry Burton, Roe and himself.

It was sponsored for several years by the Pea Ridge Optimist Club at Big Sugar Golf Course, but is again sponsored by the original group of men.

“it’s just a fun event, a good time in the old-fashioned way,” Wilkerson said.

The golf tournament was first held in Noel, Mo., and later moved to Big Sugar. Wilkerson said any money left over after expenses went to needy people and will again.

“We hope to have a fun day. If there’s any money left, it will go to the needy. All the money will stay in the community,” Wilkerson said.

There are already several sponsors including the Bank of Pea Ridge, Community First Bankand Pea Ridge Veterinary Clinic, Wilkerson said, adding that Outdoor Caps is furnishing caps.

“This is a community event for appreciation day,” he said.

Free breakfasts will be offered beginning at 6 a.m. at White Oak Station and lunch will be served at The Turn, the restaurant on the course.

Teams will be drawn on Wednesday evening, Oct. 17, at The Turn.

Players must be 21 years of age and either work in Pea Ridge, live in Pea Ridge, be a member of Big Sugar Golf Club or be a Pea Ridge High School Alumni. Wilkerson said the age limit is because alcoholic beverages are served.

The shotgun start will begin at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $40 per person.

Proceeds from the tournament will stay in the community.

Breakfast, lunch, beverages and caps are all included in the entry fee.

The scramble is limited to the first 80 people who sign up. They will form the 20 teams. To register, call 451-9550 or contact any of the committee members.
