The Pea Ridge School Board, meeting in called session, took its first concrete steps toward the erection of a new school gymnasium.

Harry M. Pratt, county clerk and voter registrar, again opened up sub-offices for voter registration in Benton County including Pea Ridge.

Pea Ridge Fire Chief Harold D. Hurd posed for a picture with Barney, mascot of the Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. The Dalmatian belonged to Danny Hickman.

The city’s lower insurance rating saved taxpayers nearly $568 for a single year’s insurance on the Pea Ridge schools.

Jr. High cheerleaders were Terri Wright, Audrey Krueger, Tanya Wilkins, Cathy Patterson, Delaina McCool and Lisa Webb.

Bob Anderson, resident manager for the Beaver Lake U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, told the Pea Ridge Christian Men’s Prayer Breakfast that Beaver Lake completed its biggest year with about five million visits through the year.

In recognition of 20 years of service to the federal government, Roland David was presented with a pin and a letter of congratulations from the regional director by Mrs. Betty Gentry, superintendent, at a special staff meeting at Pea Ridge National Military Park.

Army Sgt. Fredrick Fuller, son of Kenneth Fuller of Pea Ridge, and Army Sgt.

Glen Boxley, son of Glen and Lora Boxley of Washburn, Mo., were among 100,000 U.S. soldiers and airmen participating in Operation Reforger, or return of forces to Germany.

Pea Ridge Lion’s Club president Larry Widdifield hailed the fourth annual International Mule Jump as a total success. Spectators who watched the main event, the mule jumpfor mules 51 inches at the shoulder and taller, saw Powder River, owned by Kenny Vaught of Crane, Mo., jump 67 inches to win first place.

Thirteen Pea Ridge neighborhoods participated in crime watch program.

Area artists winning awards in the annual NEOShow at Big Spring Gallery in Neosho, Mo. were Mary Hunt, Pea Ridge, honorable mention, pastel;

Wanda Roe, Pea Ridge, honorable mention, mixed media; and Maye Hunt, Washburn, Mo., third, mixed media.

The Pea Ridge SchoolBoard accepted the resignation of Middle School principal Anita Frevert at a special meeting. Frevert cited health concerns as the reason for her resignation. David Green, former assistant superintendent with Bentonville Public Schools, stepped in as interim principal.

Members of the Park Commission met with the Pea Ridge planners to discuss the dedication of one lot in Givens Addition for a city park.

Ryan Barnett, son of Lonnie and Sharon Barnett, won first place in the tractor driving contest at the Arkansas/Oklahoma State Fair. Barnett defeated 50 other members from Arkansas and Oklahoma.
