Bakery specialties

— It’s a long way from Portland, Ore., to Pea Ridge, but that’s how far Denny Hanks and Brandy Vig traveled to open their bakery and deli.

Sugar Creek Bakery and Deli in the corner of the shopping center at South Curtis Avenue and Lee Town Road will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days a week, said Avleen Vig, co-owner of the venture. The three plan to open Monday, Jan. 7.

Hanks and Brandy Vig met while attending Le Cordon Bleu in Portland, Ore. They said they knew they wanted to open arestaurant together in a small town. Brandy’s husband, Avleen Vig, works for Etsy as a systems engineer as well as with the new bakery.

Avleen grew up in London and moved to the States in 2001. He and Brandy moved to Springdale recently to be closer to her parents. They have four children.

“We’ll have lunch specials,” Hanks said. “Brandy likes to bake - a lot! She’s really good at it.”

“I like baking something different,” Brandy said, adding that one of her favorite things to make is homemade marshmallows. “It’s fun. Kids love it.”

Hanks plans to make soups like clam chowder and beef stew for the soups of the day.

“We can do special orders,” Brandy said.

“They have a lot of specialties,” Avleen said.

“That’s our creativeness - pot pies, pasties,” Brandy added.

“We’re still working on the dinner menu,” she said, as Hanks bragged on her chicken and pasta casserole.

“We’re family friendly,” Avleen said.

All three said they want to provide a placefor a family to go instead of a fast-food restaurant for about the same price with great food.

Some items on the menu include: salads - South Western, Greek and Asian; sandwiches- Reuben, Apple & Brie, Bahn Mi and Club; and bakery items such as scones, cupcakes, cookies and brownies. Different types of breads will also be offered.
