County Judge Ralph Bolain proclaimed the first Benton County Bicycle Holiday May 21, 1972, to emphasize bicycle safety.

Fair View School students from Sept. 25, 1911, was featured with Ada Clanton Whitney as the teacher.

Linda Swinney, 1972 graduate, was the recipient of the Mayor’s Award. This award was a $200 scholarship to the Southern Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Ark.

A Memorial Day service was set for Sunday, May 28, at Pea Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Hambrick of First Baptist Church as the speaker.

Severe thunderstorms, including hail, wind, rain and lightning, hit Pea RidgeCountry and caused extensive damage.

City marshal Loyd Pifer reported a fight occurred in front of the Hawks’ Nest Saturday night, but said it was broken up before Deputy Ed McBryde arrived.

Pea Ridge Mayor Lester Hall recognized Charles Hazelton to speak at City Council. Hazelton complained about drainage on Henry Little Circle.

Donna Singleton was elected the mayor of Avoca. Kathy Trotter and Dale Kroll were elected as Avoca’s two new aldermen.

The graduating class of 1982 included 50 students, with Robin Evans and Eugene Weston tied for salutatorian and Carla Yockey valedictorian.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was scheduled to officially open the new Jacket Bridge across Sugar Creek, McDonald County, Mo.

Firemen and equipment from NEBCO, Avoca and Little Flock joined Pea Ridge firemen for a training fire. They burned a house owned by John Easley, who requested it be burned so his business, Easley’s Ace Hardware, could expand.

Star Students for April at Pea Ridge Elementary School included Amy Marheineke, Jeremiah Rounds, Rachel Hignite, Courtney Brown, Virginia Moore, Mandy Evans, Brett Buttry,Ireta Boyer and David Keen.

Students of Garfield School attended a 911 awareness and education program given by Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Joe Phillippe, Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department chief, announced his retirement.

Fourth-grade Garfield Elementary teacher Lucy Minardi was nominated by her peers to represent Garfield School as Teacher of the Year for 2001-2002.
