’Til Next Time: Musings on milkings

— I had been waiting for the flower boxes on the front of the dairy barn and one day, there they were. Thank you!

Man has not invented a machine that can put out that sweet, satisfying taste of that gallon of milk just pulled out of the refrigerator. Nature built all our bodies that we are blessed with and we all have different functions. Chickens, hogs and cows are very efficient. I will have to say that I was never as fond of the cows as I was the horses and mules. Dad had a few beef cows and two milk cows. Both of them had fuzzy, fly-swatter tails, and when they swatted me, it hurt. The tail was usually hardened with mud and weeds. If she kicked me while I was milking, I’d get up off the stool and kick her back (I was a kid), but if she swatted me, I’d getup and get the kickers off the nail and they would go around her two back feet with the tail fastened down into them. Her head was fastened in the stanchion so she could eat while being milked. I took a little satisfaction in this, like I said, I was a kid! I wasn’t asked to do the milking very often, because we milked out three and left the fourth for the calf. When I milked, he was well fed!

We’ve added Joan Wilkerson to our prayer list after she went to rehab after surgery.

I was glad to see Margaret Letter in the grocerystore. She said her husband, Gene, stays about the same and it takes more energy and strength than they have to make it to 9:30 services.

Dottie Bledsoe received the Mother’s Day corsage for “oldest mother.”

Kathy Good rushed out of morning services in time to welcome Case Pennington into the world.

She’s now a grandmother.

So, I had to come home and eat Yankee dumplings by myself. I will transport the leftovers to her house tomorrow as they are her favorite. A Yankee dumpling is like a boiled biscuit, instead of the Southern way of cutting them into squares. Either way, they are delicious.
