CLUB NEWS: Benton County Democrats

— Benton County Democrats will meet at the Elks Lodge, S. 40th Street (Promenade Blvd.) in Rogers at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 21. This is a change from the usual fourth Monday.

The guest will be Joyce Hale, who will speak about gas drilling and the proposed severance tax for gas wells. An initiated petition, to allow the question to be on the ballot next November, is circulating in the community at this time.

Hale lives in Fayetteville and has been an active member of the League of Women Voters of Washington County. While serving in various leadership capacities, her main focushas been a five-year study of natural gas development, its environmental impacts and economics of the industry. She is currently writing a series of articles called “Fracking in Arkansas” for the Fayetteville Free Weekly. She has also been involved in issues of water quality and land preservation through public policy, legislation, and public education.

She and her husband, Jay Hale, are retired from Hale Engineering, a mechanical engineering job shop which they operated in Pea Ridge for over thirty years.

New Meadowbrook Club

The New Meadowbrook Club of Garfield met at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Garfield First Baptist Church.

The meeting was brought to order by vice president Karen Launderville, who will now be the president as Selena Williams had moved out of the area.

After all recited the Pledge of Allegiance, Rheta Van Doren gave the devotions for the meeting and read the book, “Love you Forever” for Mother’s Day.

Minutes were read by secretary Ione Kauffeld and Rheta Van Dorn gave the treasurer’s report.

Information sheets were passed out on cell phonesthat will be helpful to keep in case of emergencies.

The Volunteer Fire Department will have a breakfast from 7 - 10 a.m.

May 28, and there will be a fund raiser for Marlene Dye at the Garfield Elementary School on May 17, a concert along with hot dogs, chips, and a drink which will be sold for $5 that evening.

The club will have a workday at 10 a.m. on May 23, at First Baptist Church, Garfield, and will work on projects for Christmas gifts.

Coffee was served with cookies prepared by Karen Launderville and Roxie Geddie, after which all recited the Extension Homemaker’s Creed to close the meeting.
