Habitat: A place to call their own

— With tears of gratitude, Nancy DeShields thanked her co-workers from Car Mart, Habitat for Humanity officials and volunteers, members of Grace United Methodist Church, city officials and fellow Habitat homeowner Tammy Young who received her house in 2010.

DeShields and others filled the living room of the small four-bedroom house on North Davis for the dedication and ribbon cutting Thursday, May 3.

The Rev. Zach Underwood, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, offered the home blessing. Others spoke, including Douglas Harper from Habitat for Humanity International, who was in town.

Anita Bootz with Calico Cutups Quilting Guild presented quilts to the family.

Bonnie Mangan, Bella Vista Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America, presented an embroidered wall hanging.

Debbie Hurd, Arkansas Basket Weaver’s Guild, presented a gift basket.

Dr. Bill and Mrs. Vicki Swindell where present.

They donated the land.

“Land is very expensive,” Debbie Wieneke, executive director of Habitat, said. “Without that kind of donation, wecouldn’t do what we do.”

Ron Glasgow, a former construction worker on many Habitat projects, was memorialized. “He was on our very first build,” Wieneke said. “He was like our solid foundation.”

Glasgow died this year.

His widow and daughter were present.

“He had a great heart for humanity and he will be greatly missed,” GaryZielke, construction foreman, said.

Members of Grace United Methodist presented many “love gifts” and told of 2- by 4-inch boards in the attic on which words of blessing were written.

Benton County Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Mason, who had supervised inmate labor, said: “It’s always a pleasure to help a cause like this. The inmates enjoy it. It works for thegood of all.”
