— The Pea Ridge City Council voted to blacktop Lee Town Road, from Curtis Ave. eastward to the city limits. The council also voted to hire Ronald Towle for 30 days as policeman while policeman Bill Smith was out sick.

Seven Pea Ridge volunteer firemen answered a summons to a grass fire.

The fire was apparently caused by heat from the exhaust of a backhoe which was in operation cutting new streets on the land owned by the Bank of Pea Ridge, and located behind Phillips Food Center.

Construction of the Lost Bridge Lodge atop Whitney Mountain was officially announced in the offices of the Rogers Chamber of Commerce by M.N. Bodine, president of Lost Bridge Village, Inc.

A special program, which included the ladies of members of the Lost Bridge Area Men’s Club, was highlighted with the presentation of a plaque from the club to Missy Evans, daughter of Carol and Richard Evans, recognizing her achievements in athletics.

Tom Ferstl, Republican candidate for Arkansas Attorney General, visited in Pea Ridge and took time for an interview with The Times. The candidate had been in Benton county for the county convention of the GOP, to speak to the Republican Women’s Organization, and to make visits to as many areas of the county as possible.

Avoca Clean-Up, in preparation for the annual AVFD barbecue, broughtout between 25 and 30 people with their tools and pickups.

Yolanda Pitts and Louisa Duncan were given the oath of office by Pea Ridge Mayor Lester Hall. The two women were new members of the Pea Ridge Library board of directors.

The City of Garfield appointed six people to organize and serve on the city’s first Planning Commission.

Mayor Wanda Mahurin identified the appointees as Councilman Gene Novak, Bill Davis, Darrell Nichols, Jim Trammell, Max Brown and Betty Abrams.

Pea Ridge High SchoolPrincipal Butch Smith resigned to accept a similar position in Berryville.

GTE telephone customers in Pea Ridge were offered an optional toll calling plan, the Extended Community Saver Plan, for long-distance calling from Pea Ridge to Rogers.

Adam Hostetler, son of Russ and Linda Hambrick of Pea Ridge and a sophomore at Pea Ridge High School, received a first honorable mention from the Arkansas Writers Conference for his poem, “The Truth of Life.” 10 Years Ago Wednesday, June 26, 2002 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Seven young ladies were in the running for the 2002Junior Miss Pea Ridge title.

They were Brittany Youngman, Carrie Waterman, Karas Harrison, Loresta Foster, Nikki Foster, Tasha Jessen and Dora Jiminez.

Kim Brown presented Dr. Delilah Williams and Dr. Karen Sherman with an appreciation plaque for helping begin the Women’s Business Association of Pea Ridge.

Nikita Mitchell of Pea Ridge was among the 68 young people participating in the 29th annual Farm Bureau-Arkansas “Teen Challenge Week.”

A newly proposed dog ordinance would, among other things, empower the local police to hand out nuisance citations for noisy pets.
