RECOLLECTIONS: 40 Years Ago Thursday, July 6, 1972 Pea Ridge Graphic

— The five contestants competing for Miss Pea Ridge 1972 were Quilla Heston, Debbie Clanton, Debbie Easley, Karen Gilchrist and Geraldean Glasscock.

Victory Shows provided carnival rides and attractions for the fair as it has for the past few years. The Pea Ridge school gym, located immediately north of the portion of the high school campus on which the fair would take place, was the location of commercial exhibit booths. Pea Ridge awardwinning fiddler Frank Price provided entertainment during the fair. Merchant drawings were held each night.

Injuries were sustained by a Pea Ridge High School senior, Jerry Adams, in a twovehicle accident at Blackjack Corner, a half mile west of the Pea Ridge city limits on Arkansas Highway 94.

For the first time, the annual Pea Ridge Community Fair was to feature a re-enactment of the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern, the name by which the Battle of Pea Ridge is sometimes referred locally.

Members of the Pea Ridge Park Commission discussed many things in their meeting, but they always came back to the theme - “What can we do to reduce vandalism, to preserve the parkfor its intended use?” Three barrels had been placed in the park for the deposit of garbage and other refuse.

Even with the barrels, visitors were still scatteringtrash all over the park. There were also five lights out, plus three electric eyes that needed to be replaced.

Lauri Robbins, daughter of David and Gail Robbins of Garfield, placed first in the State 4-H chicken barbecue contest.

A special hearing before the Pea Ridge School Board was requested by Cindy Mason, physical education and girls coach at Pea Ridge High School. The hearing was in response to Mason’s contract not being renewed.

The board again refused to renew the contract.

Mayor Mary Rogers officially opened the 43rd annual Pea Ridge CommunityFair with the ringing of the old school bell at the fairgrounds on the high school campus.

Pea Ridge pharmacist, Bob Harp, lead the 43rd annual Pea Ridge Fair parade as grand marshal.

Family and friends gathered to help Nell Webb of Pea Ridge observe her 89th birthday on June 29.

During the Pea Ridge City Council meeting, Mayor Mary Rogers stated that the city had received one bid for the city’s fleet insurance. The bid was for $6,648.

Northwest Arkansas Pediatric Therapy Services, Inc., began offering Kidz Camp at its Pea Ridge facility. The three-hour a day, four-week camp consisted of physical, occupational and speech therapy, along with hippotherapy in small group settings.

The family of David Miser received word that the body of their son and brother, David Miser, had been found in the Fraser River in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Miser had been missing since the first of April.

Girl Scout Cadette Troop 457 rang the old school bell to begin the 52nd annual Pea Ridge Community Fair.

Megan Blevins, a senior at Pea Ridge High School, was nominated to attend the fall 2002 National Youth Leadership Forum on Law to be held in Washington, D.C., and Los Angles.
