’Hawks dominate weight-lifting competition

— Relieving the monotony of off-season work-outs, coach Tony Travis decided to host a weight-lifting competition for the Blackhawks last week. Four high school teams met in the new multi-purpose facility Thursday, Feb. 9.

The Blackhawks walked away with the team win and most of the individual championships. Pea Ridge athletes recorded a total of 8,315 pounds lifted compared to the second-place high of Farmington at 7,530. Gravette came in third with 7,050 and Gentry lifted 5,150.

“I think our guys really enjoyed it. It was exciting to have something to look forward to,” head football coach Tony Travis said, adding that he plans to take a 10-man team to the state competition Saturday, April 7, in Russellville.

“I think it really helps relieve the monotony of offseason ... although it’s an individual competition, it’s also a team competition,” Travis said.

Several Blackhawks won both power clean and bench press within their weight categories.

Pea Ridge hosted the meet Thursday with teams from Gentry, Gravette and Farmington competing.

“It worked out good for us. Some of the guys had really good weight lifting,” Travis said.
