Blackhawks off to great start

The Blackhawk boys’ varsity basketball boys have raced out to an impressive 5-0 start to the 2012-2013 season, including a pair of victories over 7A class schools.

Most recently, the ’Hawks dismantled the Greenland Pirates by a 68-31 score Monday.

Against the Pirates, Jacob Hall sparked a 16-11 start to lead in the first quarter. Hall popped in a pair of buckets, a 3-pointer and a free to lead the charge with Levi Pitts, Evan Tillman and Isaac Mangrum adding solo field goals. Tillman and Mangrum also scored free throws.

Mangrum led the charge in the second period, scoring three field goals in the paint along with a free throw. Nick DeLeon contributed a pair of field goals as did Hall who also added two free throws as the ’Hawks assumed a 33-17 lead at the half.

The ’Hawks exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Pirates 25-10 to jump out to a 58-27 lead by quarter’s end. Six ’Hawks got in on the scoring paced by three goals by Hall, a pair of goals b DeLeon and Pitts, a 3-pointer by Tillman, a bucket and two free throws by Mangrum and a solo shot by Zach Davis.

Reserves played the rest of the way with Holtgrewe canning a 3-pointer and Loyd Kalberloh sinking a pair of field goals to go with a 3-pointer as the game ended with the ’Hawks on top 68-31.

Pea Ridge 71, Rogers 69

The ’Hawks sprung an upset in the season’s first game as they took down the Rogers Mounties 71-69 in overtime.

The ’Hawks held the Mounties to just 5 points in the opeing period to take a 9-5 lead in the beginning.

Field goals were scored by Tillman and Mangrum with the tall center adding a pair of free throws. Hall sank two from the charity stripe with Tillman adding the other free shot.

Rogers came back in the secondperiod, outscoring the ’Hawks 17-12 to take a 22-21 lead at intermission.

Pitts led the scoring for pea Ridge in the quarter with a 3-pointer, field goal and three free throws. Hall and DeLeon added field goals with De-Leon also sinking a pair of freebies.

Clark’s charges exploded in the third period, erupting for 26 points to take a 47-42 lead going into the fourth quarter. Pitts (9 points) and Hall (8) did the major damage with Tillman adding 5 and Mangrum a solo field goal.

The Mounties regrouped in the last period, outscoring the ’Hawks 24-19 to send the game into overtime. Mangrum was dominant, scoring three field goals and two free throws with Pitts matching his effort with a 3, two field goals and a free throw. Hall had two big 3-pointers as did Davis with the sophomore adding a free throw.

Tillman rounded out the scoring with a 3 and free throw with De-Leon also scoring once from the charity stripe.

The Mounties scored one from downtown in the OT but that was matched by a 3-pointer by DeLeon and a 2-pointer by Logan Rose proved to be the difference.

Pea Ridge 48, Elkins 21

The ’Hawks got ahead and were never threatened as they cruised to an easy win against the Elks.

Hall hit for a pair of field goals to go with a 3-pointer to lead the charge. Pitts and Mangrum both added a field goal as the ’Hawks were up 11-7 after one.

Hall was again the ’Hawks’ offensive engine, scoring 7 of the squads points to go with a goal by Mangrum as Pea Ridge edged further ahead, leading 20-14 at the break.

The third quarter was disastrous for the Elks as Pea Ridge blew them out of the gym, outscoring them 24-3 to ice the game as they led 44-17 to start the last period. Hall had three field goal and a pair of free throws while Pitts sank a 3 along with three field goals. Tillman canned a 2 and a 3 with Mangrum contributing a field goal as well.

Reserves went the rest of the way for Pea Ridge with Lloyd Kalberlohscoring a free throw while Gage Kelso was sinking a trey as the game ended in favor of the ’Hawks, 48-21.

Pea Ridge 63, Springdale HarBer 56

Another 7A opponent and another upset win for the ’Hawks as the locals came from behind in the second half to take the victory.

Things didn’t go well initially as the ’Hawks fell behind 15-6 after oneperiod. A pair of field goals by Pitts and a lone shot by Mangrum was all Pea Ridge could muster.

Things improved considerably for the ’Hawks as a 21-point outburst cut the deficit to just 2 by the end of the half. Hall scored a pair of treys and a free throw with Pitts adding a field goal and 3-pointer.

Tillman sank a trey with DeLeon adding a bucket as did Mangrum who also sank a pair of field goals.

The ’Hawks blew the Wildcats out the third period, outscoring them 18-7 to take a substantial lead heading into the last quarter, 45-36. DeLeon, Mangrum and Hall all exploded for three field goals. Pitts and Rose added field goals as well.

The Wildcats were forced to foul in the last period but the ’Hawks responded, sinking 10 from the line to keep HarBer at bay. Hall provided the bulk of the scoring from the field, hitting a pair of goals and a 3.

Rose added a goal and pair of free throws with Tillman, DeLeon, Pitts, Mangrum and Hall all scoring from the line. The Wildcats had their best scoring period as they put up 20 points but it was not enough as they lost by 7.

Pea Ridge 87, Green Forest 36

The ’Hawks had their best first half shooting in a number of years as they destroyed the Tigers early on.

Pea Ridge bombed Green Forest by a 23-5 count after one period to take control of the game. Hall blistered the nets with four field goals and two free throws with DeLeon and Mangrum hitting for two goals.

Tillman had a 3 and a pair of free throws, with Rose adding a field goal.

The game picked up speed in the second quarter, scoring a massive 32 points to jump out to a 57-23 lead at intermission. Hall had a pair of treys, a field goal and a free throw to lead the way. Tillman also had a pair of treys along with a free throw with De Leon and Pitts hitting twice from the floor. Pitts also had a pair of free shots with Mangrum and Rose adding field goals.

’Hawk reserves went the rest of the way, but the blowout didn’t slow down as the reserves outscored the Tigers 18-4. Davis had a pair of 3-pointers with Sheppard scoring a trey and two field goals. Holtgrewe added a goal with Rose scoring one from the line and a field goal.

The reserves outscored the Tigers 12-9 in the final period with Shane Ivy hitting two field goals, Holtgrewe scoring a trey and field goal with Horton scoring a trey to round out the scoring.
