Sewer rate increase delayed

— A special City Council meeting was set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug.

28, to repeal the ordinance raising sewer rates as public notice had not been properly advertised for the public hearing as required before the rates were raised. The ordinance was approved at the regular July meeting following a public hearing attended by about a dozen people. The rates were to have gone into effect this month, but will not until after the Sept. 18 public hearing and Council meeting, according to Ken Hayes, water/wastewater superintendent.

The increased sewer rates are needed to pay for improvements to the sewer treatment plant to meet state- and federally-mandated guidelines.
