Blackhawk golfers win meet to begin season

Mooneyham wins, Ivy places Blackhawk girls on the green

— Pea Ridge, 124, won the boys team title by a single stroke over Farmington, 125, with Lincoln, 135, edging Gentry, 137, for third place.

Prairie Grove had only two boys competing and did not qualify for a team score as the Blackhawks competed at Valley View on Monday.

Pea Ridge coach Larry Walker had confidence in Nick Mooneyham, who didn’t let his coach down and placed first among the boys with a 35.

“He’ll probably be pretty consistent most of the year,” Walker said.

Incoming freshman, Mark White, paced Gentry with a 37, good enough for a tie for secondplace with Farmington’s Dillon Jones.

All four of the Blackhawks shot under 50 with Smith, 45; Nathan Wilson, 46; and Levi Pitts, 49.

The match was originally scheduled as an 18-hole event, but was scaled back to nine holes because of the hot weather.

“You don’t want the kids to be finishing up at three o’clock in the afternoon when it’s 105 out there,” said Farmington coach Randy Osnes.

“It’s going to get a little hot,” Wilson said.

None of the schools fielded a full girls team. Gentry came the closest with three girls.

“All of us are a little slim in numbers in girls,” Walker said.

In spite of the hot weather, sophomore Lauran Ivy said she had fun and was looking forward to the season. Playing in her first-ever tournament in her first month as a golfer, Ivy shot a 63 to place sixth.

“She’s doing a good job for her first tournament, staying calm, level-headed and doing what she needs to get it down,” said her father, Tracy Ivy.

Elyse Brown shot a 70 for the Pea Ridge girls.
