Marcus Monroe Finley

Marcus Monroe Finley, 86, of El Dorado and Garfield, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Rogers. Marcus was born Sept. 7, 1925, in El Dorado.

At the age of 7, he selected Mr. and Mrs. Ernest and Ethel Willett as foster parents. A popular student at El Dorado High, on hearing of Pearl Harbor he left that behind mid-way his junior year to become a U.S. Army Air Corps B-17 ball turret gunner in the 8th Air Force’s 306th Bomb Group out of England, protecting his navigator and bombardier from aerial attack as they laid ordnance on German submarine pens, ball bearing plants and synthetic oil refineries, spending the final eight months of the war as a POW after his aircraft was shot down by flak.

Returning to El Dorado, he had a long and successful career with ArkLa Gas Co., rising from ditching crew to regional manager in three successively larger districts. While he was a real war hero, and World War II was the defining moment of a generation and of a nation’s century, his defining moments were instead his times with his wife of 63 years, the former Margaret Jean Ripley, who everyone knew as “Charlie,” especially once she went to work at the El Dorado News-Times, and his five children.

Whether having more fun in the dirt with the Christmas-toy earthmoving equipment than the children did, or enjoying it no end when his 7-year-old daughter began beating him at poker, or being there for them when times were hard, no man ever loved his family more than Finley - or had more fun with them.

Survivors include his wife; and five children, Michael Monroe and his wife, Annmarie, of Great Notch, N.J., David Starr and his partner, Theodosia, of Berkeley, Calif., John Mark and his wife, Pat, of Bella Vista, Melissa Margaret of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Lucas Russell of Rogers, and Tunis, Tunisia; and his grandchildren, William Marcus Finley, Tyler Finley and Katherine A. Burke.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Finley’s name to your favorite charity or church.
