— 40 Years Ago Sept. 30, 1971

The mysterious death of seven head of cattle found in a lush green valley southeast of town touched off a furor in the community. The sanitation landfill serving Rogers is located above the head of the hollow in which the dead cattle were found.

Pea Ridge was selected as the site for an Oct. 9 meeting of bluegrass fans, bands and promoters from six states. Leon Vansandt of Pea Ridge served as local chairman.

The School Board opened sealed bids on a used school bus and voted to accept the bid of Rodger Hickman for $250, the highest of three bids submitted. Board members also approved superintendent Andrew Widener to obtain a $7,000 post-dated loan at the Bank of Pea Ridge if it is needed to pay for the purchase of a new school bus now in use by the school. The money from the state revolving loan fund had not yet been released.

The new U.S. 71 bypass at Fayetteville was opened. The 8.8-mile, two-lane stretch cost $4,583,563.

NEBCO Fire Department workers began erecting the frame for the new fire station behind the Woodstock Corp. building, south of Garfield. Those involved included Godfrey Loper, Ralston Taylor, Ken Ford, Paul Pratt, Bob Kline, Bill Davis, Ken Jacobson, Don Robins, Don Toepfer, Lee Henningan and Gary Blackburn.

Pea Ridge Blackhawk football players pictured in the paper were: Danny Stroud, quarterback, tailback and defensive back;

and Johnny Hamilton, fullback, defensive back andoutside linebacker. The senior high football team was 2-2, and the junior high was 0-3.

20 Years Ago Sept. 26, 1991 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

A mare owned and trained by a Pea Ridge resident was judged the ninth best foxtrotter in the world. Boogie on Willow, owned by Ellie Mae Hollingsworth, earned the recognition at the third annual Show and Celebration in Ava, Mo. A foxtrotter is a gaited horse. Willow was given to her and her husband, Ray, by a mutual friend.

Pea Ridge racing celebrities Johnny and Tony Bone spent a dayin charge of racing great Richard Petty’s famous race car No. 43. The Bones explained the details, features and functions of the car for hundreds of onlookers. They answered questions about racing and told of personal racing experiences.

10 Years Ago Sept. 26, 2001 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

In the early morning mist, more than 100 students, faculty and parents gathered at the Pea Ridge High School flagpole to pray for the country, its leaders, teachers, parents, classmates and victims of the terrorist attacks.

After individual prayers, the group sang “God BlessAmerica.” See You At The Pole is an annual event organized across the country.

Hannah Candles planned to move from Fayetteville to Seligman, Mo.

The city received a letter from the company stating they are looking for a new location to build and would need 10 acres or less for their business.

Citing the need to stay competitive with surrounding cities, the Pea Ridge City Council approved a 50 cent per hour raise for all hourly employees. The council also approved raising starting base pay from $8 to $8.50 per hour. Salaried employees were not included in the raise.
