Pea Ridge’s first supermarket, Phillips Food Center, was set to open for business Sept. 27 on Arkansas Highway 94 immediately north of the Bank of Pea Ridge. It was to be operated with 11 employees and store manager John Wells.

The PTA Chili Supper was set for Sept. 25 with dinner $1 for adults, 75 cents for children 12 to 18 and 50 cents for children under 12. Adult tickets included a PTA membership.

30 Years Ago Sept. 23,1981 Pea Ridge Country Times

Mary Lou Smith, president of the Brightwater Extension Homemakers Club, won eight blue ribbons at the county fair for her productions, including plum and blackberry jelly, a perfectly shaped pumpkin and some potatoes and bell peppers. Most of her ribbons were blue. This was her first year to enter the fair. The club’s display won second place in the Farm Mutual of Rogers Award for educational booths.

Jennifer Cram, Miss Pea Ridge 1981, was named first runner-up in the Miss Benton County Fair. Jennifer Lockhart was named Miss Benton County Tiny Tot at the fair.

Residents of Beaver Shores, Rivercliff, Pine Ridge, Brush Creek Hills,War Eagle, Walnut Township, Monte Ne and Avoca signated petitions requesting the Quorum Court to establish a subordinate service district in order to contract with Rogers for ambulance service.

20 Years Ago Sept. 19, 1991 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The long awaited completion of the Whitney Mountain Chapel was set for March 1992, just in time for the spring season, according to the chapel’s developers, Joe and Bobbie Phillippe. Phillippe said there had been no complications or set-backs. The building was constructed of rock, glass and laminated archways, completewith a cathedral ceiling, steeple and balcony in the back to be used for the sound system. Ground was broken on the chapel Oct. 24, 1990.

Wanda Roe, of Pea Ridge, had a poem in the current issue of the Bulletin, the quarterly juried publication of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. “Fog on the Mountain” referred to trailblazers. Roe was the past state president and had served on several international committees.

10 Years Ago Sept. 19, 2001 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Pea Ridge High School students were allowed to watch television during class on Sept. 11 as the world received news of the worst terrorist attack in its history. When President Bush declared a day of prayer and time of silence, Pea Ridge schools observed the time of silence. At the high school, a display of flags and crosses was set up on the stage with lights shining on it. Students observed silence at noon that day.

Local gas stations raised prices to $1.89 and $1.98 a gallon, amid fears of a gas shortage. Motorists formed long lines at both stations to fill up because of rumors that gas would be in short supply and could cost as mush as $5 a gallon. Some of the stations in the area ran out of gas.
