Ozark Tombstone Carvers

Independent researcher and journalist Abby Burnett will present a program entitled, “Art, Artistry, and Eccentricity: Stories of Ozark Tombstone Carvers,” at noon Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Burnett has written numerous articles for local historical journals and for the online Arkansas Encyclopedia of History and Culture, most of them having to do with tombstones and stone carvers. She was featured in AETN’s cemetery documentary, “Silent Storytellers,” which aired in 2010 and 2011,on public television. She is currently finishing work on a book on burial customs of the Arkansas Ozarks, which includes sections on cemeteries, tombstones, quarries and carvers.

Accident School Reunion

The Accident School reunion will be held from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Accident was a rural school located northeast of Springdale; classes were held there from the 1870s until consolidation with Springdale in 1949. All former Accident School students, teachers, family and friends are invited.
