40 Years Ago Oct. 21, 1971

The City Council approved laying a base coat of gravel on Hayden Road (Jacket Road) from Arkansas Highway 94 to the north edge of the Eddie Harris property and on Lee Town Road from Ark.

Hwy. 94 to Davis Street to the east. The city normally spends about $8,000 a year on street improvements and for several years as been giving priority to getting good base coats of gravel on long-neglected streets, rather than blacktop on streets without good bases.

Peggy McKinney, a senior at Pea Ridge High School, was crowned homecoming queen in pre-game ceremonies, at the Pea Bowl. She is the daughter of Fred and Mabel McKinney. She was one of seven maids selected, two each from the senior, junior and sophomore classes and one from the freshman class.

When asked what he wanted for his birthday, 100-year-old Bud Barnes had the answer all ready to give: “I want good health and lots to eat,” he said right back, laughing heartily as he did. He was born Oct. 22, 1871.

Mayor Lester Hall administered the oath of office to Pea Ridge’s newest councilman Jerry Collins.

A Pea Ridge Blackhawk salute was given to Danny Stroud, quarterback, tailback and defensive back, and Vince Whitley, guard and defensive tackle. Pea Ridge was ranked fourth in the 1-A West standings with 3-2 in conference gamesand 3-4 in all games total.

Pea Ridge Planning Commission had a special meeting to consider rezoning some areas of the city to alleviate problems for areas which do not fit the new zoning regulations.

Jr. high cheerleaders were Terri Wright, Tonya Wilkins, Lisa Webb, Lisa Larson, Stephanie Wright and Delaina McCool.

20 Years Ago Oct. 17, 1991 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people attended the third annual Pea Ridge Lions Club Mule Jump. Six mules competed in the category of 51” and under. Sunny, owned by Don Sams, won the event for the thirdconsecutive year. Frosty, owned by Negel Hall of Pea Ridge, won the 51” and over.

The Benton County Planning Board approved the development of a stock car speedway west of Pea Ridge, assuming the developer, Gary Wilbur, satisfied certain requirements.

10 Years Ago Oct. 17, 2001 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Two former world champion jumping mules battled for first place in the 51-inch and over category. Radar owned by Mike Call narrowly defeated Willie B.

owned by Carl Chism of Colcord, Okla., with a jump of 58 inches at the 13th annual event.

Kathleen McKinney was sworn in at a special meeting as the new mayor of Seligman. She was nominated by Alderman JoDee Anderson and the nomination passed unanimously.

They called it sweat equity and the Avoca City Council had invested plenty in it’s new city hall. Not only did the city save for years until the new building could be built without debt, but also the council had reduced the cost by painting the building themselves, inside and out.

Minta Messer had a booth at the Ole Applegate Place Farm arts and crafts fair and sold appliqued Razorback T-shirts and sweat shirts, as well as denim jumpers and jackets.
