Vandalism problem at park

— Recent vandalism at the park in Givens subdivision could cost residents more than a place to play.

“The kids are writing all over picnic tables, really foul stuff,” said Nathan See of the Pea Ridge street department. “There is currently no table, and it’s taking away from people who did use it, families that like to have picnics out there.”

See said the vandals ruined a $200 handicapped swing by etching profanity into it.

Pea Ridge Police Chief Tim Ledbetter said he has stepped up patrols in the area.

“We have stopped and talked to children in the area to let them know that we are watching. We would like them to help us by letting us know if they see something,” he said.“We want toensure the safety of all citizens, especially children at the parks or anywhere in town.”

Complaints are not only about vandalism, but also bullying by older children at the park.

Both are criminal activities and are punishable by arrest, Ledbetter said.

“They can be dealt with through the judicial system and they, or their parents, could be required to pay retribution to the city,” he said.

City parks are provided to the public with public funds. Equipment that has to be replaced or repaired is done so with taxpayers’ money.

“There won’t be a park out there if it doesn’t stop, they’re not going to have anything out there because they’re ruining it all,” See said.

To report criminal activity, call the Pea Ridge Police Department at 451-8220, option one.
