President Ione Kauffeld opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Rheta Van Doren based her spring devotions on flowers. The Bible did not have may references to flowers, however, she quoted Job 14:2, James 1:9-10 and Peter 1:24. Allof these verses referred to the briefness of our lives as compared to the shortness of blooming flowers. God is with us as he is aware of the flowers. She also read a poem by Maya Angelou entitled, “When I Say I Am A Christian.” Ms. Angelou says that she is not boasting wen she declares that she is a Christian, but acknowledging that she is a sinner and needs God.

Rheta also shared a piece entitled, “Only In America.” Karen Launderville will give the devotions next month.

Eula Anderson thanked the members for the Easter gifts which the club members made for the residents in her building at Autumn Place.

Nine members answered roll call by telling which house plants each member enjoys.

The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved as read.

In school news, it was reported that Garfield Elementary School principal Anita Turner is leaving at the end of the school year.

The entire school went to Arvest Ball Park to watch a game last Wednesday.

It was a long day for the younger children, but very enjoyable.

Kauffeld, Selena and Amber Williams attended Spring Council at Cave Spring Church of Christ on April 26. Each club provided a table centerpiece using buttons, which was the topic of the day.

Selena and Amber made the centerpiece which took first place and will be displayed at the county fair.

Van Doren reported that there were button factories near where she used to live in Iowa which used clam shells to make the buttons.

The age of a button can be determined by the material used to make it.

Kauffeld took pictures to the county to be included in the scrapbook to be made for the state meeting in June.

Officers for the new year starting in July are Selena Williams, president; Karen Launderville, vice-president; Kauffeld, secretary;

and Van Doren treasurer.

There is a leaders training meeting on June 22.

The county fair will be held August 17-21. Members are working on items to display and to be sold in the Country Store.

Van Doren presented a report on using herbs in food preparation. Besides the handouts, she had samples using the herbs.

Members shared helpful facts that they use in herb storage and usage. Whole spices last longer than crushed, and can either be dried or frozen.

The meeting was closed with the Homemakers Pledge. The next meeting will be 10 a.m. June 8, at the First Baptist Church in Garfield. All ladies in the area are invited to attend.
