’Til Next Time — Life doesn’t always run smoothly

A big hickory nut tree went down in the wind storm last week.

I felt bad because I had used a few of the nuts, like maybe I could pick out enough for one hickory nut cake a year.

Those nuts are hard to pick out and I finally followed older, wiser advice, so I’d soaked them a few days then put them down in the freezer, then take them out to crack and pick a few at a time. They can also make your fingers sore in a hurry but I still felt bad about the tree.

When we moved here there was a grove of hickory nut trees along the east fence line of the Wardlaw Cemetery.

How many trees are in a grove? Five or seven I guess! This tree was just down the hill from the cemetery.

I guess it wasn’t my week for living things.

I had purchased six tomato plants. One was growing so much better than the rest. I came along with the weed whip and wanted just a little closer, just that one more blade or grass, and there lay that beauty of a plant, cut off at the top of the ground. Did you hear that agonized scream of frustration?

Also we lost one of the baby chickens this weekend. They are three weeks old and about one half feathered out and at an ugly stage. We’ll need the heat lamp three more weeks.

There is a card shower for Clarice Wistrom on her 80th birthday, in Rogers, at 924 S. 14th St.

Brightwater United Methodist Church celebrates with the Meyers family as their girls graduate this year. Sarahand Loren are students at Pea Ridge.

Grandma Ellen came from Nebraska to help Connor celebrate a birthday and watch both boys play one ball game, but Connor broke his arm at a ball game so only Thomas will get to play for her.

Monday morning, my little Sheltie dog spent the night in the garage, went in the chicken run and killed all but one.

Needless to say, she’s not our favorite dog right now.

Life doesn’t always run smoothly.
