Voters in Pea Ridge School District chose Royle Carnes as the new board member, then formed almost a solid block vote for the 5-mill increase in school taxes.

The drive to help Mike Mattison of Heavener, Okla., obtain a kidney machine through Betty Crocker coupons spread from Pea Ridge to the entire area. Daisy Manufacturing employees counted over 8,000 coupons that they collected for the drive. The drive went on for three weeks and totaled approximately 42,000 coupons altogether collected in this area - and they were still being counted.

30 Years Ago

In a hotly contestedelection campaign, Ronald Foster and Kent Webb were winners over Wayne Hileman and Mark Easterling for the two open seats on the Pea Ridge School Board.

Benton County’s role and that of its municipalities, in case of emergency occasioned by a nuclear attack on the United States, was presented and discussed at a meeting in the county’s Public Service Building in Bentonville.

In the month of February, 30 years ago, field deputies of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office answered 231 complaints and investigated 17 accidents.

20 Years Ago

Dan Hinskey wanted young people coming outof Pea Ridge schools to be prepared for the real world. That’s why he started, with the cooperation of the school administration, a weekly parent workshop.

The workshop focused on problems with academics, but not solely academics.

The Pea Ridge Area Ministerial Alliance announced plans to distribute funds locally to aid Operation Desert Storm families, continued their study of a “Meals on Wheels” program and endorsed a proposed area recycling plan.

10 Years Ago

At the second annual Middle School Science Fair in Pea Ridge, Shae Fuller and Lauren Coleman took first place in the eighthgrade division of the fair.

Their project, Lipstick Life, tested the lasting power of lipstick when exposed to light and heat.

Pea Ridge City Council bought two police cars at a special meeting. The cars had been budgeted and ordered through the state bidding process.

A celebration of the 139th Anniversary of the Battle of Pea Ridge began with the marching beat of a drum and fife and included a bagpipe version of “Amazing Grace.” It ended with the playing of “Taps.” Though the ceremony was held in weather that was sunny and beautiful, some said it was the first time in 10 years that the annual ceremony hasn’t been held in rain, hail or snow.
