— 40 Years Ago

An announcement was made this week by Harlan Phillips and son, John, of Bentonville, of plans to begin constuction on a new 12,000-square-foot supermarket in Pea Ridge to be known as Phillips Food Center.

Shaw’s Furniture, TV and Appliance moved into the handsomely remodeled quarters in the downtown business section of Pea Ridge. The business had been located at the corner of 2nd and Poplar streets in Rogers. Upon losing its lease on the building, the firm chose to re-locate in Pea Ridge in the building located on Capt. Pickens Road at the corner of Gen.

Curtis Ave. The building formerly housed the pea Ridge Furniture Store, which closed when its owners returned to Alaska.

A program called a “First Responder” course in emergency first aid was presented to Pea Ridge firemen and police. The program was designed for those who will be the first on the scene of an accidentor in other emergencies involving injuries. When the 48-hour course was completed, those attending will be capable of stabilizing the injured and preparing them for transportation to the nearest medical facility.

Sheriff Don Rystrom requested the Quorum Court waive the hiring freeze to allow him to fill the opening in the civil department and the commissioning of deputies who would not be paid by the county. The 67 approved, added to the present compliment of the BCSO, 33, brought the number of law enforcement officials in the county under the sheriff up to 100.

Gary Campbell, president of the U.S. Highway62 Business Association, asked the Pea Ridge City Council to consider the purchase of a sign on the new U.S. Highway 71 bypass. Campbell said that he believes that luring traffic to Arkansas Highway 72 and on U.S. Highway 62 would be the best route since these highways lead to Silver Dollar City and the Branson area.

The Pea Ridge Fire Department purchased 1,200 feet of 2-1/2 inch nylon fire hose at $2.50 per foot to replace the 20-year-old cotton hose on their 1972 city truck. They would now be able to perform the required hose test standards.

Dr. Karen Sherman, owner of Oak View AnimalClinic, was honored as a top donor to the Northwest Arkansas Horse Show Association (NWAHSA), which sponsors eight to 10 horse shows per year to raise money to send young people and their families to the state horse show in Little Rock on Labor Day Weekend.

Fred’s in Pea Ridge held its grand opening in cold, rainy weather. A line of people waited at 9 a.m.

when the doors opened and received tickets for drawings during the day. Regional manager Jerry Clay presented a coffee maker to the oldest person waiting in line, Ann Howard, 80. The youngest person, Abby Robinson, 4 weeks, received a stuffed animal.
