Mrs. Nancy Latham of Avoca was named the new executive secretary of the Benton County chapter of the American Red Cross.

The dangerous brown recluse spider was causing some concern in the Pea Ridge area, as several people had been bitten.

The county agent told the community to sprinkle Chlordane 5 percent, dust or granules, on closet floors and leave it for a few days, exterminating the spiders.

Individuals were told there was a six- to eight-week healing period if bitten.

Garfield was awarded a $2,000 state matching grant to be used to improve public facilities. The grants provided a cooperative effort between community, county and state in financing the purchase of fire fighting equipment or construction, improvement and development projects benefiting the citizens of the unincorporated rural community or small incorporated town (population of less than 500).

Two break-ins were reported by Don Hall, Garfield Mini-Mall, to the Benton County Sheriff’s office. June 16 a window in the laundry section of the building was broken and June 21 the screen door to the oil room was cut. Nothing was reported stolen.

20 Years Ago June 20, 1991 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Pea Ridge volunteer firemen responded to an alarm on Weston Street after an unidentified motorist ranover a natural gas valve spewing natural gas into the air. Jay Hale and Tim Woods capped the leak until Arkansas Western Gas come to repair the damage.

No one was injured.

Five girls who were going to be competing in the Miss Pea Ridge contest were Shannon Cooley, Candice Cottingham, Dawn Day, Kimberly Laird and Pamela McGaughy.

Bennie Gallant joined the Pea Ridge Police Department. He had nearly 1,000 hours of police training and had 30 college credits in his field.

Rebecca (Beckie) Tyson, managing editor of the Times of Northeast Benton County, was recognized by the Arkansas State Press Women at the organization’s awards luncheon.
