40 Years Ago July 29, 1971

A four-foot velvet-tailed rattler was killed with one rock thrown at its head by Bill McElmurry. This type of snake is related to the timber rattler and the diamond-back. He saw the snake coiled up on the highway about three miles east of Seligman, Mo., on the edge of the Mark Twain Forest, between Seligman and Roaring River. Two cars tried to run over the snake but failed, so Mr. McElmurry finished it with the rock.

The Pea Ridge Canning Co. was purchasing tomatoes for processing at the number two plant at Harrison. Plant manager Marvin Dean said tomatoes from this general area were arriving sooner and in greater amounts than anticipated. Jobs at the Pea Ridge plant go first to eomployees previously working there.

The Pea Ridge School Board approved a budget of $868,663.54 and hired Charles Nowak as the new football coach.

A proposed 1 percent county sales tax failed at the voting booths.

Mark Howell and coach Jim Roe finished first place in both the singles and doubles categories in the Pea Ridge tennis tournament.

Lee Anderson, Pea Ridge, won the $900 firstplace prize Sunday at the Centerville Drag strip, beating 31 other cars with a time of 9.81 seconds. His brother, Wayne Rogers, son second place in bracket two with a time of 9.98 seconds.

According to Mabel Givens, the farmers are busy putting up their second cutting of hay. There has been a bountiful hay crop, wheat, and good gardens.

20 Years Ago July 25, 1991 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Pea Ridge School Board members approved raises for the high school principal and superintendnet. Members gave a $4,000 raise to high school principal Butch Smith. His previous salary was $36,000. Superintendent Marvin Higginbottom received a $4,600 raise increasing his salary to $50,824.

Barbara Merritt was named administrator of Oak Ridge Retirement Lodge by Thelma Hughes, who will remain as a consultant.

Street addresses in the city were to change within the year as they were assigned by the NorthwestArkansas REgional Planning Commission under with the Emergency 9-1-1 Commission.Pea Ridge National Military Park conducted special events to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National Park Service.

Pea Ridge School Board chairman Ronnie Foster said that he was going to seek re-election to the board.

A reception was held in honor of Wanda Roe, Pea Ridge, who was artist of the month at the Rogers Art Guild Gallery. Roe had approximately two dozen works, most of which had been completed within six months. The works were executed in a variety of mediums, including metal and leather.

10 Years Ago July 25, 2001 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

Lots went on sale in the Big Sugar Golf Club Development south of Pea Ridge. The Pea Ridge City Council passed an ordinance and emergency clause accepting the final plat of Phase 1. Phase 1 included 156 residential lots - 76 single family lots, 31 single family golf lots, 14 townhouse lots, 18 townhouse golf lots and 17 zero-lot line golf lots. Eventually, developers planned to build more than 600 residences in the area.

Deane Willey on Lee Town Drive in Pea Ridge had sunflowers that were approximately 13 feet tall.
