Pea Ridge Historical Society

The Pea Ridge Historical Society met at 6 p.m. June 28 at the home of Morris and Marcia Cothran. The meeting began in the shop where Morris talked about Henry Ford and his invention of the Model A and Model T cars. Morris showed a 1929 Model A that he was in the process of restoring. He described the process and answered questions from members.

After the program on Henry Ford, we proceeded to the house for the business meeting. President Mary Durand opened the meeting and requested that Gus Bradley give the treasurer’s report. Marcia read the minutes of the previous meeting. Margaret Cheek made a motion that reports be approved, motion seconded and passed.

The Summer Fest plans were discussed and workers for the museum were requested for each evening, July 6, 7 and 8. Gus Bradley announced that dues of $10 were due in July.

Durand asked for new display ideas for the museum and for Arvest Bank for August. Katherine Bailey talked about Civil War era costumes that would be made to use for the Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Battle of Pea Ridge in 2012.

We were delighted to have Ron Simmons and Jet Wonnacott as visitors.

The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, in the museum. Any person interested in the history of Pea Ridge is invited to attend.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. There is no charge to visit.

New Meadowbrook EH Club

President Selena Williams led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Rheta Van Doren based her devotions on four articles - “God’s Angels,” “The Light at the End of the Tunnel,” “What is the Holy Spirit?,” and, in honor of the fourth of July, “The Ragged Old Flag,” written by Johnny Cash.

Karen Launderville will give the devotions next month.

Six members answered roll call by telling which bird is their favorite and why.

The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved as read.

Selena introduced Patti Gardner and Leslie Denton, the founders of God’s Pantry, who told us about their organization. Two Years ago, on July 17, they opened God’s Pantry, when they realized the great need in our area for food, clothing, linens, furniture and appliances.

They receive donations from individuals, groups and many community businesses. They also buy food at reduced prices as well as personal care items. They apply for grants and are a non-profit group. Their hours of distribution are Thursdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and they stock shelves on Tuesdays, 1 p.m. until they are done.

Volunteers are welcomed. The pantry phone number is 359-2079 or call Leslie at 359-3136.

Betty Phillips is ill and Ione Kauffeld broke her leg.

Ione is unable to put weight on her foot for at least two more weeks. Both were unable to attend the meeting and are missed.

Selena reported that the county requests that members purchase name tags to be worn at county meetings. The price is $5.75 and the deadline for ordering is now.

She attended a day-long training meeting for judging items at county fairs. After some discussion, it was decided not to have a booth this year, but to start thinking about entering again next year. It is time to volunteer to work at the fair, but no forms are available at this time.

We will discuss work schedules at the Aug. meeting.

A field trip to Gentry, for an Eagle Watch, was suggested and January or February is the time to take this type of trip.

After coffee break, Selena read a joke. Ask her about it.

Rheta presented a program on staycations and passed out a list of good places to visit in Arkansas. These included the Rogers History Museum, Daisy BB Gun Museum, Rogers and Bentonville water parks, Lake Atlanta for swimming, swimming or fishing at Corps Park or a group rental of a pontoon boat from a marina on Beaver Lake for a few hours.

Roxie Geddie volunteered to give the next program which will be on the care of houseplants, especially those found growing naturally in the tropics. Roxie also invited members and guests to have the Aug. 10 meeting at her home. The meeting will include a potluck meal.

The meeting was adjourned with the Extension Homemakers Creed.
