Start your engines: lawn-mowers, that is

— The boredom of mowing a lawn row-by-row is cured.

Riders with “souped-up” lawn mowers will start their engines for the first time to compete at the Pea Ridge race track July 30.

Lawn mowers will zoom down the race track for a fundraiser sponsored by the Lions Club to promote eye care in the community.

“The Lions Club is the largest club in the United States, and we work to promote eye care in our areas nationwide,” Ken Hayes, president of the Lions Club, said.

Not only will there will be a lawn mowing race, but the Lions Club has scheduled an evening filled with several events.

The youngsters of The Cobb Brothers Bluegrass Band will have the crowd out of their seat and dancing along to their tunes to kick off the entertainment for the evening.

“The band has performed in Branson before so we’re really expecting a good show,” Hayes said.

The Cobb Brothers will be followed by Brush Creek, a local band that will keep the community’s toes tapping to the beat.

Local lawn mower racers will be joined by professional racers from Kansas.

“Kansas is bringing in five racers with souped-up lawn mowers to add to the competition,” Hayes said.

Since the Lions Club was formed a year and a half ago, the lawn mower race is the biggest fundraiser they have sponsored so far.

Hayes hopes to raise money from the event to help pay for the cost of purchasing glasses and helping the community.

Lawn mowers will make their way down the race track at 5 p.m. July 30. Admission is $6 for children and adults, which will cover the race and entertainment for the evening. Children under 5 years old are free.
