Bus garage approved by city planners

— Concerned about the weight of traffic on the proposed gravel road, city Planning Commission members and a representative from the Water Department asked how many buses will use the driveway into the bus garage. Two water lines lay beneath that road.

Depending on the weight of the vehicles, and the frequency of the travel, the lines may need to be sleeved, said Michael Nida, Water Department employee.

“I’m really worried about that one right where it comes off the asphalt,” Nida said.

Planners and city department heads met Thursday at a technical review meeting to discuss the proposed bus garage. School officials and engineer Gene Pierce answered questions and made notes about the city’s recommendations.

The large scale development plan for the bus garage, planned for construction south of the Primary School off Weston Street, will be presented to the full Planning Commission at the Aug. 2 meeting.

Planners also discussed construction of an educational facility for First Assembly of God Church, although no representative from the church attended the meeting. It was approved although it was recommended a different species of tree be planted from the maples proposed because of their invasive root systems.

M.J. Hensley, planner and engineer, said the proposed detention pond was unnecessary.
