The importance of dental health for pets

Keeping a pet’s teeth clean is very important. As humans, it is important to brush and floss daily. Pets, however, haven’t mastered this trick yet. It is vital to keep a pet’s mouth clean. There are many things owners can do at home to help maintain a healthy mouth for their pet.

Brushing a pet’s teeth, special diets, Greenies or other dental chews and water additives are a few of the easy, inexpensive ways to help maintain a happy mouth.

Bad breath from Fido or Fluffy is one of the first things pet owners will complain about when it comes to their pet’s mouth. But, oftentimes, there are problems with the mouth before the breath starts to become offensive. Pet owners usually don’t look at their pets teeth - but they should. Lift up the pet’s lips on a regular basis to evaluate gums for swelling (gingivitis) and excessive tartar on teeth. If checking out a pet’s teeth is uncomfortable for owners, be sure to have a veterinarian look at the pet’s mouth during a physical exam.

Some pets require a dental cleaning. It is always best do have a professional cleaning done sooner rather then later. If dental disease is left untreated, it can lead to infection, dental extractions and can even damage the heart, liver and kidneys.
