— 40 Years Ago

Benton County Judge Ralph Bolain was sworn in to office by Circuit Judge Bill Enfield. Participating in the ceremony were Doris Webb Searcy of Bentonville, who was a Pea Ridge High School graduate who serves in the county treasurer’s office, and Mary Lee Adams of Pea Ridge, a deputy in the county collector’s office.

The Bank of Pea Ridge added Richard Beaver and L.E. Hardy to the board of directors.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wardlaw observed their 58th wedding anniversary.

City recorder Lee Otis Hall was sworn into office New Year’s day by Mayor Lester Hall.

Sarah Edwards celebrated her 95th birthday at Gateway Chapel.

U.S. Highway 62 was dedicated in ceremonies at the intersection of U.S.

Highways 62 and 71. Speakers included State Representative Richard L. “Dick” Barclay and Rogers Mayor Jack Cole.

The foundation for a dental clinic was constructed at the corner of North Curtis Avenue and Patton Street.

Bill Long was the new patrolman with the Pea Ridge Police Department.

Mitchell Webb, Pea Ridge,chairman of the Benton County Conservation District, announced an election for three directors for the district.

20 Years Ago

Chris Snow, Ben Baugh, Erick Harp and Jeff Spivey took advantage of the inclement weather and extended holiday vacation by sledding on a Pea Ridge hillside and were featured in a photograph in The Times.

The Pea Ridge United Fund secretary Freida Crabtree said the board had allocated money to the following agencies: Boy Scouts, $1,450; Little League, $7,500; Beta Alpha Sorority, $1,000; Pea ridge Band Boosters, $2,000; and Girl Scouts, $2,500.

Mary Durand was featured as the good cook.

Pea Ridge and Garfield area Girl Scouts were taking orders for cookies, according to Girl Scout leader Sheila Rizzio.

The president of the Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce, Joyce Hale, said that the organization is exploring the possibility of using the Pea Ridge school’s new media center for adult education classes.

Pvt. Eric J. Bridges, a 1989 graduate of PRHS, completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

The Pea Ridge Times celebrated its 35th birthday.

“It was born Jan. 1, 1966, ushered into the world by James (Jim) and Marge Edgmon. Then known as thePea Ridge Graphic, the paper was published that first year by the Edgmons and their teen-aged children in the basement of their home in Springdale. There, type was set, ads and pages were made up, clerical work and writing was done,” wrote Billie Jines in an article originally published Jan. 6, 1988.

Snow remained from Dec. 13 and was covered with ice that fell on Christmas Day.

New figures on damages to homes and businesses from the Dec. 12 ice storm are being reported to the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management.

Ozark Outreach, started by Iva and Jerry Roberts, offered help and hope to more than 3,000 families.
