Winning Blackhawks start young

— The sixth-grade boys’ Youth Competitive Basketball teams won the championships in their division last week in Lincoln. These boys, according to their coach, Kevin Hall, began playing basketball with YCB as early as third grade.

These two teams finished this year undefeated.

“This is the ‘winningest’ group to ever play for Pea Ridge in YCB,” Hall said.

He said the B team has played for three years with an overall record of 36 and 1. They were B division champs in both fifth and sixth grades.

The A team overall YCB record was 37 and 0; and they were division champs fourth-, fifth- and sixthgrades.

Neither team has ever lost a YCB game played at home.

Hall said he has taken the A team and played in tournaments in Purdy, Mo .,in third grade, Southwest R5 Tournament in fourth and fifth grade and a Mid America basketball tournament in Springdale as fifth-graders playing in sixth- and seventh-grade division. Their overall record since the third grad is 48 and 2.

They lost one game in the Purdy, Mo., tournament to a team from Springfield, Mo., by 1 point. They came in second in that tournament.

The only other loss they had was when they were in the MAYB tourney in Springdale, Hall said. They lost one game in pool play to a seventh-grade team from Springdale in overtime. They ended up winning first place in that tournament in bracket play.

Hall, who is “resting” from coaching YCB this year, said he expects these boys will continue to be an asset to the Blackhawks in junior and senior high school.
