Hike needed to meet demands

— A proposed sewer rate increase will be presented at a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, in City Hall.

A public hearing was held last month and attended by city officials, department heads and two citizens - Gary Tuszynski (a former Water Department employee and current Street Department employee) and Larry Miser.

Ken Hayes, superintendent of the Water/Wastewater Department, presented the rate increase proposal with accompanying documentation telling council members that federal guidelines for both ammonia and phosphorous, as well as capacity restrictions were driving the rate increase proposal.

Hayes said it has been eight or nine years since the sewer rates were increased and a lot of customers receive the minimum bill.

Mayor Jackie Crabtree said he encourages anyone with questions about the sewer rates to attend the meeting. The annual audit of the water/wastewater department will be presented during the regular Council meeting by Leroy Duell, certified public accountant with Keen & Company Accountants, Springdale.
