— 40 Years Ago

The 1971 valedictorian for Pea Ridge high school was Penny Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy L. Hall.

The salutatorian was Bryan McBride, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted McBride. Honor graduates included Carolyn Grimes, David Musteen, Lora Copeland, Vicky Simpson, Rae DeGroff, Ray Easley and Darla Ivy.

Lloyd Taylor placed first in the Pinewood Derby races held at the Pea Ridge Cub Scout Pack meeting.

Second was Greg Schumacher and third Franklin Fletcher.

According to Don Strickland, Pea Ridge, coach of the Rogers Boxing Club, the following amateur boxers won their matches: Bobby Oxford, Pea Ridge;

Jackie Ford, Garfield and Bill Johnson, Avoca.

Groundhog Day was a perfectly fine, cloudy, cold day.

30 Years Ago

Members of the Pea Ridge graduating class of 1940 met at the home of Fred McKinney. Pictured were Joe Lasater, Rex Evans, Fred McKinney, Janell Hickman Webb, Evelyn Wells Frazier, Izella Williams Warren, Emma Lou Crabtree Price and Hazel Miller Walker.

Plaques were presented from the City of Pea Ridge by Mayor Lester Hall for appreciation of services to former city officials.

Receiving plaques were Daryle Green, 20 years,Eula Mae Walker, 10 years, and Fred McKinney, 23 years.

Lisa Laney and Kenneth West, Washburn, Mo., have been named to fall semester honor roll at Southwest Missouri State University.

Southwest FFA members attending the Greenhand Motivational Conference were Reba Banks, Cary Cheek, Marty Wallace, Pete Rose, Karla Jones, Lucresa Vanzandt, Ronda Anderson, Norma Morgan, Wendy Carter and Connie Long.

20 Years Ago

James A. Gastineau, son of Avaon and Robbie Gastineau, Pea Ridge, was serving aboard the U.S.S. Worden.

According to figures released by the U.S. Census,during the last decade Garfield grew at a faster rate than any other municipality in Benton County.

Pat Patterson, United Fund drive chairman for Pea Ridge, received a plaque of appreciation.

Patterson and other volunteers raised more than $21,000.

The Pea Ridge Lions Club donated $1,700 in hearing and sight testing equipment to the school.

Pictured was school nurse Gert Van Lent testing the hearing of second- grader Michael Easterling as Lions Club president Dale Wagner watched.

The Pea Ridge Extension Homemakers Club meeting was conducted by president Helen Schooley. Secretary Maxine Richardsoncalled the roll and Doris Lookadoo led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Pea Ridge schools closed due to illness.

Twenty percent of the students and 18 faculty and staff members were absent causing the Pea Ridge schools to close Friday for a long weekend.

Seniors, offensive lineman and defensive end, Nick Lamer and quarterback, Michael Easterling, were named to the Class AA All-State team.

The Dollar General Store was broken into, merchandise was strewn about and the safe was missing. Store manager Zella Mays confirmed that the entry was gained from the rear of the store.
